Bangladesh lose Joy, Mominul at stroke of tea

Sports Desk:

Bangladesh seemed to go through the second session of the first day of their first Test of the two-match series against New Zealand unscathed as Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque formed a partnership but things turned sour at the end as both the set batters were gone and the Tigers ended the session on 185-4.

Bangladesh added 81 runs in 28 overs in the second session, losing two wickets.

Joy was dismissed for 86 off 166 balls, his fourth Test fifty, and hit 11 fours. Mominul scored 37 off 78 balls, hitting four fours.

Debutant Shahadat Hossain Dipu (0) and Mushfiqur Rahim (1) are unbeaten at the crease.

Bangladesh started the session on 104-2, after losing Zakir Hasan (12) and skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto in the morning session.

Joy and Mominul took a more cautious approach in the second session as they valued their wickets more than quick runs as they focused on building the innings.

The first 10 overs of the session produced only two boundaries, both coming from Joy’s bat, with the second, a beautiful cover drive, bringing up his fifty off 93 balls.

His partnership with Mominul took 104 balls to reach fifty as the pair opened up following that as they upped the scoring a bit in the second hour of the session.

However, their partnership could only reach 88 off 171 balls as Mominul was caught behind off Glenn Phillips trying to play a cut, which only led to an under-edge.

And three balls later, Joy fell too as Ish Sodhi found his outside edge when the opener prodded forward, and Daryl Mitchell at slip took a sharp low catch to ensure the dismissal.

The remaining nine balls of the session was seen off by Shahadat and Mushfiq.

Earlier, Shanto won the toss on his debut as Test skipper and opted to bat first.

The Bangladesh openers Zakir and Joy started off steadily, and New Zealand burned their first review in the second over of the day when Kyle Jamieson’s LBW appeal against the former was turned down by umpire Ahsan Raza, and the subsequent review saw that Zakir got an inside edge.

The duo saw off the early swing but the partnership only lasted the first hour as a delivery from Ajaz Patel turned sharply and beat Zakir to castle him.

Coming into bat, Shanto was positive from the get-go as he took on left-arm spinner Ajaz, hitting two sixes and a four.

That saw New Zealand skipper Tim Southee bring in off-spinner Glenn Phillips in the attack, and it paid quick dividends as Shanto tried to take him on too but could only manage a top edge that hung in the air for aeons before Kane Williamson completed the catch expertly.

Shanto’s dismissal brought Mominul to the crease just 10 minutes before lunch, and he and Joy ensured that Bangladesh reached three figures in the first session as they ended on 104.
